203gow: Crocheting Anything and Everything

Tuesday July 6th, 2010

203gow sees the world through yarn. Anything this crochet genius settles her eyes on, she can put together with her crochet hook at incredible speed.

According to the artist, her inspiration comes from a desire to express all the traditional, cultural, every-day, Otaku, and sometimes just plain weird things that exist in Japan through her crocheting. Why? Because laughter is an international language, and 203gow is on a quest to bring smiles on people’s faces all over the world through crocheting the trivial and unexpected. (What more reason do you really need?)

203gow not only raises the bar with her unique choices in composition, but also her honed technical skills, constantly tinkering to push the boundaries of her crochet hook and yarn. She’s especially skilled in a technique she calls “一筆編み” or “one stroke crocheting” (this is an unofficial, rough translation) in which the yarn is not cut unless absolutely necessary, in order to create smooth, even shapes (Crocheting in small parts then attaching each part to create a whole piece is a more common practice, but can result in uneven seams and bumpy edges).

In the past few years, she’s been an active member on ravelry, a site dedicated to helping yarn enthusiasts keep track of their projects and stay on top of information, and has been using the opportunity to take part in inter-cultural exchanges through her crocheting. She comments that comparing the attention to detail that prevails in many Japanese works, to the abundant individual styles from around the world has been very stimulating and inspirational.

Aiming to further fuse crochet with other art forms, she has a few themes in mind for future projects, including:

  • “machines and crocheting”
  • “sounds and crocheting”
  • “people and crocheting”
  • “flying crochets”

…among others.

203gow’s blog combines her personal works along with her musings (in Japanese, but full of pictures). She’s also got a photo blog
if you just want to check out the pictures.

What does this crochet maestro do with her spare time between crochet projects? Look at children’s picture books. (Great advice for anybody in a creative rut!).
